Fire destroys filling station, 6 vehicles in Lagos

(Nigeria) Six vehicles, including a 33,000 litre-fuel tanker, got burnt on Wednesday when fire gutted a filling station in Lagos.
Eye-witnesses said that the fire started at 6a.m., at the Mobil Filling Station on Oba Akran Road, Ikeja, when the tanker  fell on its side as it was about to enter the station to discharge petrol.
One of the witnesses, a bus driver, who simply identified himself as Kunle, said that the fire spread across the busy Oba Akran Road as the tanker spilled its content.
 ``The timely intervention of fire servicemen from Alausa stopped the fire from spreading to other areas,’’ Kunle said.
Also, the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, said that his office received an emergency call from the public at 6.20 a.m., that the filling station was on fire.
He said that before his office received the call, his men had noticed a thick smoke billowing into the sky from the direction of the fire, stressing that he ordered a 10,000 litre water truck to the scene.
``When we got the call informing us that the fire was in a filling station, I then ordered four more trucks of 10,000 litres each of chemical fume. It took us about two hours to put out the fire with other emergency agencies around.
``No life was lost, one person sustained injuries and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for treatment. The fuel tanker and five other cars were completely burnt.
``Other things burnt include a transformer, supplying electricity to the area, electric pole, cables and the roof of the filling station.’’
He said that information made available to his officers showed that the fire incident happened when the tanker attempted to maneouvre  its way into the station without crashing into vehicles queuing to buy petrol.
``We learnt the tanker stepped on an object that lifted it sideways and there was a spillage of its contents, resulting to fire explosion. The fire followed the spilled products across the road,’’ he said.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
